2027 Fitter of the Year - LVT Competition

Remembering Ian James

Fitter of the Year

In Memory of Ian James - 1967-2026

The Fitter of the Year competition holds a very special place in the history of the NICF, and so does Ian James.

Ian was instrumental in bringing the competition back in 2016, following a 15-year absence. Given his own achievements as a fitter and competitor, it was a cause that meant a great deal to him. He understood the importance of celebrating the skill, knowledge and craftsmanship of professional fitters, and was passionate about providing a platform where those skills could be recognised.

Ian went on to become a much loved and highly respected head judge and compere of the competition. He was exceptionally knowledgeable and brought enormous experience to the organisation of the event and judging, but it was perhaps when he took to the microphone that Ian was truly in his element. He had a natural ability to make people feel at ease and always brought a sense of fun and joy to the proceedings. His wicked sense of humour was never far away, and there were invariably plenty of laughs along the way.

The photograph above was taken at the Fitter of the Year semi-finals in June 2026. Ian was delighted to be well enough to attend and made the most of his time there, judging, catching up with friends and colleagues and, of course, enjoying a few giggles

Ian sadly passed away at home surrounded by his family on 12 September 2026, aged just 59, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. His contribution to the NICF and the wider flooring industry over three decades was immense, but his legacy within the Fitter of the Year competition is particularly enduring.

Dan Jones, NICF Vice-President and fellow judge comments, "Working with Ian was always a light hearted situation but It had to be right, he meticulously planned everything and we realise and appreciate how much effort he put into the competitions to make it professional and challenging. Myself and Brian King worked closely with Ian over the last few years and as we all know that he put his heart and soul into everything he did. I have seen a van loaded to the top by Ian on his own and I thought it was a struggle to unload it with two of us to carry some of the items. I don't think I ever heard Ian complain about work. Going forward I hope as a team we can keep the competition as up to scratch as Ian did for all that time. We have lost a good friend and work colleague who will be missed greatly".

Every competition that follows is, in some small way, a continuation of something Ian cared deeply about. His knowledge, enthusiasm, humour and passion for the fitting profession will remain part of the competition he helped bring back.

Ian will be greatly missed, fondly remembered and forever part of the Fitter of the Year story.
