Membership Categories and Criteria for Master Fitter Assessments
TRAINEE FITTER
This category is for trainees and those serving an apprenticeship in fitting. Trainee members are expected to upgrade within three years.
FITTER
This is intended for persons actively involved with fitting. Applicants must supply details of three referees who can vouch for the standard of their work, and successfully complete an examination, either written or oral. Applicants are encouraged to apply for Master Fitter status within three years of becoming Fitter member.
ACCREDITED FITTER
For practising fitters who have reached an intermediate level of competence assessed by the Institute. Entry requirements are:
- Three written references from people who can vouch for the standard of your work.
- Successful completion of examination (written or oral).
- An assessment of a completed installation will be undertaken by an NICF Assessor (and will include a customer survey).
MASTER FITTER
For practising fitters who have reached an advanced level of competence assessed by the Institute. Entry requirements are:
- Three written references from people who can vouch for the standard of your work.
- Successful completion of examination (written or oral).
- Applicants must give a practical demonstration of their fitting skills and answer questions relating to fitting under the direction of an NICF Assessor.
PLEASE NOTE THAT FITTERS JOINING AFTER 1 JUNE 2013 IN THE ACCREDITED FITTER AND MASTER FITTER CATEGORIES WILL BE RE-ASSESSED AFTER 5 YEARS.

Assessments are generally carried out at the FITA Training Centre but on-site assessments can be arranged.
ASSOCIATE MEMBER
This grade of membership is open to persons supporting the aims of the NICF but who are not practising fitters. Associate membership is for you personally and not for your company or any fitters who may be employed by or contracted by you. The NICF will only recommend Master Fitter and Fitter members to potential customers.
PATRON MEMBERSHIP
This is for any Company connected with, or related to, the floorcovering trade e.g. large retail store, manufacturers, who wish to support the aims of the Institute. The NICF will only recommend Master Fitters, Accredited Fitters and Fitter members to potential customers.
RETAILER MEMBERSHIP
This category is for small to medium-sized shops and does not cover fitters working for the retailer. (The NICF will only recommend Master Fitters, Accredited Fitters and Fitter members to potential customers).
Statement regarding abuse of the NICF logo
Using the NICF logo without permission is considered an extremely serious matter by the NICF and our Council. The NICF logo is a registered trademark and using it without the authority of the NICF is unlawful. As such, it is the NICF's and our Council's policy that any person or company who has previously been found to use the NICF logo without the right to do so (which is usually obtained through Membership), must remove the logo from all areas of its/their business including but not limited to its/their vehicle livery, marketing materials, stationary, business cards, website, social media, emails etc.
